| Why the therapeutic team is part of the treatment Scoliosis treatment, whether we are talking about exercises alone or also bracing, can be an uphill battle in which adherence to the therapy itself is always fundamental.
To ensure that a youngster manages to be collaborative in carrying out this demanding therapy, especially considering that it is often undertaken during early adolescence which is a notoriously tricky time, it is essential that all those interacting with the patient and with their family make sure they are always on the same page, giving clear and consistent messages. With this in mind, it is easy to see why the therapeutic team, by encouraging patient compliance, plays such an important role in achieving the goals set... |

In each number of our newsletter, we present the experiences on how scoliosis is treated worldwide through an interview with one of our Online Master course participants. They are fellow doctors, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians coming from all over the world.
This month's interview, is with Al Hafiz Ibrahim a rehabilitation physician and lecturer from Malasya. "In Malasya the part of conservative treatment is still very weak because there are not many experts in managing it, especially as far as exercise and bracing are concerned..."

SEAS: an encore in Turkey and a debut in Romania
After the two SEAS courses that took place in Turkey at the end of February, Michele Romano, Director of Physiotherapy in Isico returned to Ankara for a third course on March 10. The three courses totalled 65 participants.
At the end of March, the teacher skipped to Romania to perform there for the very first time a SEAS course, organised thanks to the collaboration of two former participants, a physiatrist and a physiotherapist, from a past edition of our online master course.
On March 16, Romano presented in an online webinar on the treatment of scoliosis with exercises organised by FH Johanneum, University of Applied Sciences in Austria.
Finally, with great satisfaction, we communicate the success of the participation in the webinar held weeks ago in Kyiv (Ukraine) on the treatment of scoliosis around the world: over 800 specialists connected! |

More than fifty patients participated in the 2022–2023 edition of our national competition, "Concorsetto," dedicated to those who wear a brace. In fact, the collection of works (photos, videos, drawings, texts, etc.) ended a few weeks ago, and at the moment the votes are underway on the Italian Facebook channel of Isico and the internal jury of our institute.
The competition is confirmed as an important opportunity for our patients to share their personal experiences and tell their stories. The winners' award ceremony will take place in May. |

Does scoliosis worsen during menopause?
Idiopathic scoliosis mainly affects females. Once reached adulthood, there are periods during a woman’s life in which there are major body transformations that necessitate greater watchfulness.
One of them is menopause when, and in subsequent years, the risks of a sudden worsening of the clinical situation increase. The body changes and the ageing process that undergoes acceleration upon entering menopause can cause the worsening of existing curves and the appearance of new curves, so-called “de novo scoliosis”.
This is why it is important to make periodic visits and keep your curve checked. |

Scoliosis does not cause back pain Scoliosis diagnoses in children are often delayed, the condition remaining painless and progressing silently as they grow. However, the fact that scoliosis can be painless doesn’t mean that it always is.
in fact, in children, the condition can often cause pain resulting from biomechanical stress linked to the effects of the curve on surrounding soft tissues such as joints, discs, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. In older adults, scoliosis is accompanied by age-related degenerative changes, and, in this case, pain can also be caused by nerve compression or spinal stenosis, i.e., a narrowing of the space through which the nerve exits the spine. |

| SOSORT meeting: an ISICO study on treatment adherence
“Adherence to Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercises during adolescence: voices of patients and their families. A qualitative content analysis” is one of the 8 studies being presented by ISICO during the forthcoming SOSORT international conference in Melbourne, Australia.
Its purpose was to explore the experience with PSSE of adolescents with spinal deformities and their parents, and their insights on how to assess the quality and frequency of PSSE performed at home. The study is the exploratory phase of the development of a new Rasch-consistent questionnaire to assess adherence to PSSE in adolescents with spinal deformities. |

Skiing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or even jumping in the air - is it possible when wearing a brace? Yes, it is; the hundreds of patients who participated during the past 10 years in our Concorsetto, the national ISICO competition dedicated to brace wearers, proved it.
The videos and images of these kids are the best encouragement for those who are preparing to follow a demanding therapy such as that for scoliosis, and who are living the fear of not being able to practice a sport or play an instrument.
For our monthly appointment find out on our YouTube channel @ScoliosisManager Marika 12 years old having fun on the playground...
