| .Why we at ISICO “talk in front of the children”: the importance of patient participation
Although “talking in front of the children” is a deliberate “policy choice” on the part of our organization, we are sometimes criticised for it in quality assessment questionnaires.
Some parents, for various reasons, like to have a separate consultation with us, either before or after seeing the patient, but as doctors and therapists, this request always makes us uncomfortable. Let us explain why... |

In each number of our newsletter, we present the experiences on how scoliosis is treated worldwide through an interview with one of our Online Master course participants. They are fellow doctors, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic technicians coming from all over the world.
This month's interview, is with Essam Rashad from Egypt, physiotherapist, specialising in scoliosis management and other spinal deformities.
"In Egypt the number of schools specializing in the treatment of deformities of the spine has increased, which has led to a diversification of views on the treatment of scoliosis...". |

Training Day 2023: Isico blows out 20 candles!
The Isico staff, which includes doctors, therapists, secretaries, administrators and communicators, gathered in Milan, as they do every year, coming from all over Italy. The two days of training and team building numbered almost a hundred of us, which shows how rapidly our Institute has expanded in recent years.
It will certainly be one appointment to remember because in 2023 Isico turns 20! Furthermore, the presence of an external consultant who helped us see each other from the outside and inside was a great added value for team building. |
| SEAS: Michele Romano in Tirana and Ankara The SEAS courses continue, and in February they stopped in Tirana, Albania, where they landed for the second time. Our director, Michele Romano, involved 24 therapists who were enthusiastic about the course. The second appointment was in Ankara/Turkey, where the local host, despite the dramatic event, did not deter from spreading the SEAS method's training, hosting two courses at the end of February, both of which were sold out. In addition, Michele Romano will participate in a webinar, broadcasted from Kiev, Ukraine, on March 1st. He will present a very interesting general overview of how scoliosis is treated around the world.

Sabrina Donzelli will participate in the first Spine Registry meeting
Isico will also be present at the Spine Registry meeting, the first congress to discuss how to create and manage a data registry for spinal column pathologies, scheduled for March 23rd. Dr Sabrina Donzelli, an Isico physiatrist, was in fact invited to chair the Spine Tango task force.
Since 2002, Spine Tango has been EUROSPINE's international spine registry for quality assurance and research on surgical and non-surgical treatments and their outcomes.
"Our goal - explains Dr Donzelli - is to gather data from international participants to provide performance benchmarking and a collective evidence base of treatment effectiveness, patient safety, and best practice. The collected data will then be made available to everyone.
"Certainly, as a representative of Isico, I will be able to make a fundamental contribution to what concerns the rehabilitation treatment of vertebral pathologies."
Furthermore, Dr Donzelli will be one of the four guests present at "Dr Rigo Invites", a streaming event organized by Dr Manuel Rigo on March 4 to talk about "Challenges behind scoliosis management". |

Are X-rays harmful? People’s concerns over radiation exposure from X-rays are exaggerated.
There was a time, in the early days of radiology, when the equipment used really was very harmful, because it used very high X-ray doses, and it was some considerable time before the risks were appreciated. Over the years, however, the technique has improved greatly, and today’s X-ray machines are nothing like the ones that were used in previous decades.
In the past years, with the switch from analogue to digital equipment, the radiation used in X-rays has been reduced by 15%. The arrival of the new EOS technology, albeit not so diffused due to its high costs, reduced the low radiation of a digital X-ray by another 90%. What is more - and no one ever thinks about this - we live our lives constantly immersed in the background radiation that comes from the sun, which is comparable to that used in radiology.
It must also be pointed out that scoliosis can only be diagnosed by cross-checking the findings of the clinical examination with those of an X-ray. X-rays are also able to give us indications on the prognosis, i.e. on future risks associated with the scoliosis, in particular the risk of deterioration, and they are necessary for monitoring the progress of the treatment. |

| I hurt my back bending forwards. That's one movement I'll be avoiding from now on!
No, forget that! The literature talks of “kinesiophobia”, that is fear of movement. We can sometimes hurt ourselves doing a certain movement, and the most natural response, or defence mechanism, is not to repeat that movement, so as to avoid experiencing the pain again. In actual fact, various studies have shown that this fear actually helps to make the pain become chronic and persistent. Gradually, your range of movement is reduced, restricting your ability even to move. A good physiotherapist, among other things, can guide you as you try to reintroduce the movements you fear. With the specialist’s support, you can find that they don’t actually cause you pain, or discover that there are strategies you can use that enable you to do them painlessly.
Fear of movement (often unjustified) is a “yellow flag”. Others are catastrophising, i.e., losing hope in the possibility of recovery, and thinking obsessively about your condition. A number of studies have related catastrophising to increased pain perception, and lower levels of physical activity to increased disability and a greater financial burden on the health system. |

| A video about cervical spine
We recommend a video of our physical therapist, Bruno Leonelli, focusing on the cervical spine. This is an in-depth analysis, part of a series of videos made by our experts for internal use, but in some cases, like this one, it might also be useful for training other professionals. |

Skiing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or even jumping in the air - is it possible when wearing a brace? Yes, it is; the hundreds of patients who participated during the past 10 years in our Concorsetto, the national ISICO competition dedicated to brace wearers, proved it.
The videos and images of these kids are the best encouragement for those who are preparing to follow a demanding therapy such as that for scoliosis, and who are living the fear of not being able to practice a sport or play an instrument.
For our monthly appointment find out on our YouTube channel @ScoliosisManager how you can hula-hooping, as Ilaria...
