| It was Christmas 1914, the first Christmas following the outbreak of the Great War, and one that brought a truce between the Germans, Scots and French then engaged in gruelling trench warfare.
A Bavarian soldier, Josef Wenzl, wrote this to his parents: “It was very moving; men, who up until that moment had been sworn enemies, were gathered around a burning tree, singing Christmas carols. I’ll never forget it. Clearly, the humas spirit survives even in these times of killing and death.” The episode was criticised and hushed up by the high commands, who decided to transfer the soldiers in question to other areas in an attempt to stop the spread of pacifist sentiment.
A film director, Christian Carion, told the story of this Christmas miracle in the film Joyeux Noēl. We recount it now as a way of wishing everyone, the world over, a Happy and Joyful New Year. |

| Reliability of rasterstereography as an alternative to X-rays in the diagnosis of scoliosis and its monitoring
To date, scoliosis continues to be diagnosed through clinical evaluation and confirmation by radiological examination. Monitoring its progression often entails frequent radiological assessments, which carry risks associated with radiological exposure, especially in growing patients.
Even though a low-dose radiation radiological investigation (using the EOS Imaging System, also offered to our patients) has recently been developed, it would still be an advantage to have radiation-free methods for monitoring scoliosis and its progression... |

I've got back pain: should I lie down?
Absolutely not! The latest and strongest evidence on low back pain says that you should get moving rather than stay lying down, because it will reduce your recovery time and encourage healing. Movement helps you to recover and improve more quickly. Don’t forget that it’s much easier to lose than to recover muscle strength and stamina. So, the best prevention for back pain and relapses? Get plenty of physical exercise!

Can you do sport if you have scoliosis?
Yes, certainly, perhaps with the exception, in more severe cases, of competitive sport and intensive training. Sport is actually thought to be an important complement to a specific re-education activity, as it naturally promotes good neuromotor maturation of the adolescent growing body. Moreover, it reinforces the physiological abilities of an impaired spine while reducing the side effects of bracing (if a brace is worn).
Furthermore, doing physical activity with a brace on (when this is feasible) enhances the modelling action of the forces applied by the brace pads. |
