SEAS: an amazingly busy July!
3 appointments, 2 courses each, from Brazil online, to Serbia and then to Ankara, both in-person: Michele Romano, head of physiotherapy at Isico, closed the first half of the year ending with a busy July teaching our SEAS approach to a total of 100 participants.
A real record that closes months of intense commitment with courses around the world, finally restarted after the break due to the pandemic: over twenty courses have been held since the beginning of the year, from the United States to Croatia to France, with hundreds of participants.
During the six courses held in July, besides the participants from 4 other countries, two groups from the Republic of Korea and The Netherlands, finally headed after 3 years of postponements to Novi Sad in Serbia. Now there is a deserved summer holiday for the SEAS courses, but we are ready to re-start end of September from France. |

Should we go for the straight back goal?
Paola has scoliosis: her back is twisted on itself. Therefore, she has been given a brace to wear — a nice plastic “jacket” that she is actually going to have to wear for some years to come. But why? Well, to straighten her back, of course!
This, of course, is a logical train of thought, but unfortunately logic and medicine don’t always go hand in hand. |

Skiing, playing a musical instrument, dancing or even jumping in the air - is it possible when wearing a brace? Yes, it is; the hundreds of patients who participated during the past 10 years in our Concorsetto, the national ISICO competition dedicated to brace wearers, proved it.
The videos and images of these kids are the best encouragement for those preparing to follow a demanding therapy such as that for scoliosis, and who are living the fear of not being able to practice a sport or play an instrument. What is one of the main complications after scoliosis surgery?
Sometimes (not often) the rod breaks. But since the rod is located in scar tissue or even bone tissue, it is unlikely to cause particular problems.
The situation would need to be evaluated, and the decision on whether or not to perform further surgery would have to be taken after considering the damage that the rod could cause and weighing this up against the risks of a second surgery.
This is something that, in order to make an informed and conscious choice, would have to be discussed directly with the surgeon. |
